Post marathon vacation

The marathon is over. McGinnis and I conquered the dreaded 26.2 miles in Kansas City last Saturday.

As a reward, and to escape the horrible gloom in St. Louis, I decided to fly out to LA to visit Barrister for 5 days. I know why southern California is so expensive—the weather is perfect here all the time.

Yesterday, we spent a few hours at the Getty Museum under a cloudless sky. If you’ve never seen the Getty, I can’t recommend it highly enough. The collection is acceptable but the scenery, architecture and grounds are truly remarkable. In fact, I might go so far as to say that I’ve never seen a more amazing interaction between architecture and setting than at the Getty. Just go see it if you’re in LA.

We’re chilling today so that we can get up bright and early tomorrow for a cannonball run to Vegas. We booked two nights at the M Resort, just off the Strip. Room rates on the Strip this weekend were totally outrageous ($600/night at Caesars) and I found a promo code for the M. We’re going to bet on some football and play a few poker tournaments before heading back to LA Monday afternoon.

That’s it. You have the breakdown.

Oh, and here’s a quick shot I snapped at the Getty on my iPhone:

Just stumbled across the Busey Bucks that Barrister and I designed, printed, and used to fool people on the streets on St. Louis a few summers back. I laugh every time I see this.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Here’s my ringtone for when Barrister calls. That’s him extolling the bad ass prowess of “Crusades Jesus” on top of some sweet redneck power ballad.

OSX Watch '09

After a protracted battle with Apple’s latest OSX incarnation, Snow Leopard, I’ve been forced to withdraw. The upgrade was plagued by egregious bugs that forced many applications to crash, most notably Adobe’s Creative Suite. My brand new iMac was rendered basically useless, except for surfing the web and generally fucking around. Even worse for productivity than normal.

After submitting design concepts that were due this morning, I set about backing up my important files and applications, readying myself for a strategic withdrawal from the fight.

I successfully executed a rear guard action that led to a clean install of Leopard, the original, not this new impersonator, and I’m fully functional once again. I can even Save For Web in Photoshop again!

Anyway, here’s my advice: don’t install Snow Leopard. There’s a rumor that they’re already working on a second patch that will allegedly address the worst bugs but it’s still not worth the risk. I will never be an early adopter of an operating system ever again, even one released by Apple.

The good news is that Snow Leopard made my system noticeably snappier so I’m eager to get a stable version in the future.

Zombieland: A+++

I freakin’ loved Zombieland. McGinnis and I were laughing our asses off from start to finish. It was the perfect mix of comedy and zombie action. At its heart, this movie is definitely a comedy, one which benefits from brilliant casting. Woody Harrelson is the undisputed star of the movie; and were it not for him, I would have given the movie a B+. He was worth a full letter grade to me.

Most zombie movies focus on the horror of the apocalypse but Zombieland takes a different angle; it treats the apocalypse a little like a video game, only funnier.

If you’re anything like Barrister, you’re going to piss your pants when you see the Beverly Hills scene. It’s absolutely perfect.

I’m not going to give anything away here so I’ll just say that Zombieland provided the most fun I’ve had at a movie in a long time. It’s an instant classic to a zombie fan like me. In fact, it’s tied for first place as My Favorite Zombie Movie, with 28 Days Later.
